Preview: Poker is no longer simply a game. Televised tournament events have turned it into a sport and elevated those who play Poker to rock star status. The public, mesmerized by both tournaments and its stars, desires a piece of the proverbial Poker pie. Participation in online Sit & Go tournaments has, thus, increased dramatically in recent years.
Sit & Go – Set Up and Cost
Sit & Go, also known as S-n-G, is a type of Poker tournament that has caught the fancy of virtually every Poker patron in cyberspace. The Sit & Go tournament typically consists of a single table with a relatively costly buy-in. The game is fast-paced and is usually completed within an hour, keeping in line with the lifestyle of many of today’s top online Poker players.
The number of players at the table varies according to the site on which you’ve chosen to play. For example, if there are ten players at the table, your game buy-in might be $20 plus $2. Simply stated, the $20 goes toward the winning purse and the $2 is the website operator’s commission for hosting the event. In this case, the winning pot would amount to $200 divided amongst the top finishers of the game according to pre-determined table rules.
Sit & Go – Play Strategies
The optimum Sit & Go strategy is to play to stay in the game as long as you can. The longer you remain in the game, the greater your chances of finishing in the money. “In the money” usually denotes the tournaments top three finishers.
Many Sit & Go participants play too aggressively and find themselves eliminated from competition without ever a fair shot at finishing in the money. Others are in a hurry, playing rushed games while watching the clock. Speed and convenience are, of course, two of the top Sit & Go selling points. But one should never sign in for a game (s)he doesn’t have sufficient time to finish.
It is, instead, recommended that you play conservatively on your first outing, even dropping out early from those contests you feel you have little chance of winning. Fortunately, you’ll be able to preserve your chip count.
At some point in the tournament, you will be able to display your Poker ability and win a large pot that will put you in a position to ultimately finish in the money. There are usually only 9-10 players in the game and blinds go up about every 10 hands. So, when the flop hand comes around in Texas Hold’em, swoop in and bet aggressively if the card fits your hand.
Sit & Go – Types
There are basically three types of Sit & Go tournaments to choose from:
- Single Table – As described above, there are usually less than 10 players at the table, and the top three finishers are in the money.
- Double Table – The players’ skill level is generally a notch above those who play single level because the pots run about twice as large as the singles. This version also takes longer to complete.
- Turbo – In this version, the blinds increase at a much faster rate and less time is allotted for players to make decisions. The game moves along at a brisk pace and is not well suited to beginners.
In Sit & Go tourney play, you will encounter every kind of Poker player. Follow the suggestions above for a Sit & Go experience to remember.
