The Beginning: Dario is a fearless competitor whose movie star looks and charm belie his innate ability to crush opponents in a game of poker. He takes no prisoners. Dario was born some twenty-four years ago in Palermo, Italy. He was involved in sports at an early age and enjoyed kicking around a soccer ball and shooting hoops with friends.
His main sport as a youngster was wrestling. Dario participated in organized wrestling and judo tournaments and he advanced to national final competition in both competitive sports. Shortly thereafter he realized that his competitive juices could be satisfied through the game of poker. After his first taste of Texas Hold’em in 2005, Dario took it upon himself to learn all he could about the game. He dedicated himself to Texas Hold’em, playing game after game until he was satisfied that he could compete against the best in the world.
In 2005, Dario started to play poker professionally. While the competition was keen at first, Dario broke through in late 2005 with enough points to become eligible for a seat at the EPT Main Event in an online tournament.
Career Highlights: On October 19, 2005, Dario scored his first major impact in the professional poker world by taking 3rd place in the Amalfi Open, garnering a neat $2,175. This high finish only whetted his appetite for more! It was during the summer of 2007 that Dario’s poker career took off. He made the final table in the 41.5 million PLO Hi-Lo Split 8 or Better Tournament. In September, 2007, Dario made his mark in the professional poker industry by winning the World Series of Poker Europe WSOP Pot Limit Omaha Championship. This victory earned him $439,411 and established him as a force in the game.
This year, Dario has been consistently in the top money at poker tables throughout the world. In June, he had consecutive places of 9th, 9th and 4th in the Capt. Bregenz Open, the World Series of Poker No Limit Deuce to Seven Lowball, and the World Series of Poker Pot Limit Omaha, respectively.
Epilogue: If he continues to compete in his fearless style, there is little doubt that Dario Alioto will carve a niche for himself in the Professional Poker Hall of Fame. Dario is a studious player who keeps copious notes on all his opposing poker players. He believes that his opponent’s style of play is very telling and he can better gauge said opponent’s moves if he is familiar with it. Dario knows that playing poker is not for the feint of heart. He once lost $40,000 in two hours playing on 4 tables 20-50 cap PLO.
Dario’s advice for players just starting out is to play freeroll in the beginning. At the age of 24, Dario Alioto is already considered among the world’s finest poker players. You can watch him play each week on televised tournaments.
