With the World Series of Poker a mere three weeks away from kickoff, Las Vegas is preparing for the largest poker event of the year. The city, like many others, has suffered greatly due to the worldwide economic crisis and a large, attention-grabbing event like the WSOP is a great way to return some of the excitement Vegas is known for.
Just as the EPT in San Remo was able to provide a little “economic oxygen” to the city, the WSOP should bring much relief to Las Vegas. A poker tournament of this importance not only fills the casinos with poker players who spend for hotels and restaurants, but it is a real magnet that attracts poker fans.
In recent years, a real poker tourism industry has developed. The group is made up of two types of customers: those involved in following the major poker tournaments as spectators, and amateur or semi professional players looking for convenient packages so they can participate in tournaments. It is no coincidence therefore, that travel agencies which specialize in poker tourism are popping up.
The city expects tens of thousands of tourists to visit the city and attend the 57 events that make up the tournament. These spectators join the 60,000 players who are actually taking part in the WSOP events.
