Nadal victorious at Roland Garros, looks forward to Wimbledon

admin June 8th, 2010

Rafael Nadal’s triumph at Roland Garros reconfirmed him as the king of clay while also providing him with a big step in his recovery from a hard year. After a very difficult period, this victory is the icing on a cake following recent victories in Rome, Madrid and Monaco. It also returns him to #1 in the world rankings.

This win was Nadal’s fifth at Roland Garros, one shy of Bjorn Borg’s six French titles. Nadal is on a mission to beat this record and in addition to the beautiful “Coupe des Mousquetaires” trophy he took of 1,120,000 Euros. His 8,700 points in the ATP rankings has him back at number one, just ahead of Roger Federer who has 8390 points.

The Spaniard has no intention of resting on his laurels though and he is already looking ahead forward to Wimbledon, the third Grand Slam of the year and the only one played on grass. Nadal managed to win the English championship in 2008 by beating Roger Federer in a historic match that showcased the amazing levels of skill both players have; it is his only Wimbledon championship.

In preparation for Wimbledon, Nadal will participate at the AEGON Championship which takes place from June 7-13 at the grass tennis courts of the Queen’s Club in London. The Queen’s tournament official website recently published news that since the first edition of this tournament in 1979, 25 out of 27 winners at Wimbledon took part at AEGON Championship.

Nadal clearly hopes to be added to this list.
