In 2003, Chris Moneymaker changed the world of poker with his victory in the World Series of Poker Main Event. Moneymaker, who qualified for the WSOP online, inspired many new players to try their hand at the game. As the number of new, more aggressive players grew, Moneymaker was unable to keep up skill-wise and he found himself in a strange situation: he had become a legend, but was not able to win another major tournament.
“Between ‘04 and ‘06 I thought I understood how the game works,” he said. Unfortunately, this hasn’t been the case. New players who followed in his footsteps changed the way they play poker and he hasn’t been able to adjust his game. His revolutionary style of play, which surprised everyone in 2003, no longer worked and Moneymaker left tables both puzzled and defeated.
Finally, in early 2009, Moneymaker decided to begin studying the game again from scratch. He wanted to re-examine the way he played and change his style, abandoning a number of moves that distinguished his play. Now he has a more aggressive approach, made of raises and more raises along with fearlessly bluffing. The first positive results of these changes were seen at EPT Monte Carlo 2010.
Although Moneymaker did not succeed in grabbing a big victory, he now has a positive vision of his professional future and the intention to prove something, especially to himself.
